Philadelphia police are investigating whether a crime was committed after finding the remains of a fetus inside a pipe, Fox affiliate WTXF-TV reported.

A contractor found the fetus this week inside a pipe in the Kensington section of the city, according to the station.

Authorities said the pipe is connected to a toilet and that the fetus appears to have been about three months along.

"Determining if this is a crime is going to be based on the age of the fetus, and if, in fact, it was a viable fetus, and that's going to be the determination from the medical examiner," said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Authorities are also concerned for the woman who may have had a miscarriage and could be in need of medical attention.
