A newborn baby girl was found abandoned outside a gas station in Long Beach, Calif., on Monday night, authorities said.

A woman found the just-born child near a dumpster after she heard it crying when she walked past, KCAL-TV reported.

The girl was taken to a local hospital, where she was in stable condition and being evaluated Monday night, Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Massacani told the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

"We are conducting a felony child abuse investigation for someone placing a child in a situation that could cause death," Massacani said, adding that police had not yet identified any suspects.
