New Hampshire elementary school locked down after student shoots self

A New Hampshire elementary school was placed under lockdown after a 14-year-old student shot himself in the face in the cafeteria with about 70 students present.

Cheshire County Attorney Peter Heed said Friday the gunshot wound was self-inflicted. The shooting happened about 11 a.m. at Walpole Elementary School. The student was hospitalized. His name and condition were not released. No one else was hurt.

Nick Phillips, an eighth-grader who shares homeroom with the student, says the boy had been passing notes during the week saying he was depressed. He said it wasn't clear why.

Students in fifth through eighth grades attend the school. Parents were outside and were being allowed in to retrieve their children, some of whom were being interviewed by police.
