Officials at Rutgers University say the FBI has determined there is no threat to students on their Newark campus after a student was arrested and his dorm was searched for potentially hazardous substances.
A spokeswoman says the investigation has concluded and students would be allowed to re-enter the dorm Wednesday afternoon after it had been evacuated twice in two days.
Rutgers-Newark spokeswoman Helen Paxton said police arrested sophomore Elan Haba of North Caldwell on Tuesday night. The 19-year-old faces charges including theft, and possession of fireworks and a prohibited weapon.
On Wednesday afternoon, Rutgers-Newark's Kemel Dawkins, the executive vice chancellor, sent out an email and text message to the school community about the ongoing situation on campus. The email, a copy of which was obtained by FoxNews.com states:
"Last night, Tuesday, Feb. 7, our campus police received information from University of South Dakota authorities that led them to search the room of a Rutgers-Newark student. This operation was conducted along with the Essex County Bomb Squad and the Newark Police Special Operations Division. The teams found potentially dangerous materials in the student’s room and removed the materials. Subsequently students from University Square, Woodward Hall and Talbott Hall were evacuated.
The student whose room contained potentially dangerous materials was arrested on multiple charges.
Just a short while ago another evacuation of University Square was ordered. The FBI is now involved with this matter. FBI officials informed us a short while ago that a potentially hazardous substance that would not have been detected by the squads last night should be further investigated.
Everyone in our university community should understand that we are handling this situation with the well being and safety of everyone foremost in our minds."
Haba's arrest came after the University of South Dakota alerted New Jersey authorities that one of their students with an alleged connection to Haba had been found with suspicious materials.
A law enforcement told NBCNewYork.com that similar materials were found in both Haba's room and the room of the student at University of South Dakota.
It appears both of the students were making homemade fireworks, the source told NBCNewYork.com.
Paxton says the FBI is re-checking for materials that may not have been detected in an initial evacuation and search.
Haba has been released to his parents. It's not known if he has a lawyer.
The school and the law school building was not evacuated.
