A passenger on a Carnival cruise to the Bahamas died after falling from an upper deck, Carnival Cruise Lines said Saturday.
In an emailed statement to NewsCore, Carnival said a 26-year-old male guest "fell from one of the upper levels of the ship's atrium to the lobby level," while the ship was docked in Nassau Friday night.
Bahamian authorities on Saturday boarded the Carnival Fantasy to investigate the incident.
The victim's identity was not released but WCBD-TV in Charleston said he was from South Carolina. The Carnival Fantasy was on a five day trip from Charleston to the Bahamas.
Carnival extended its "heartfelt condolences to the guest's family and loved ones" and said it was assisting in the investigation.
Carnival Corporation is the parent company of Costa Cruises, whose Costa Concordia liner ran aground off the Italian coast this month, killing at least 17.
