Police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide Wednesday after a man reportedly shot his wife dead outside a Southern California courthouse before killing himself.

The woman was shot and killed in the parking lot outside the Riverside County Courthouse in Hemet, which primarily handles family law cases, The Press-Enterprise reported.

The suspect, who police said appeared to be the woman's husband, fled the scene in a car.

When police caught up with him, he reportedly stopped the vehicle and committed suicide, the paper said.

The victim and the shooter have yet to be identified. Cops cordoned off part of the parking lot to investigate the incident, but the courthouse, about 80 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, remained open.
