NEW YORK – The New York Police Department is investigating why it took more than eight hours for a police officer suspected of drunken driving to be given a blood-alcohol test.
Rafael Casiano crashed his car at about 4:30 a.m. Friday in the Bronx while off duty. Another officer riding with him with was hospitalized with a head injury.
The Daily News reported Sunday that even though investigators at the scene said Casiano reeked of alcohol, he wasn't tested until 1 p.m. By then, his blood-alcohol level was well below the legal limit.
An NYPD spokesman says the department's internal affairs unit is looking into why there was a delay.
The 44-year-old Casiano was arrested and suspended from the force. The name of his lawyer wasn't immediately available.
