New York Man Sues Airlines in Detroit 2009 Plane Attack

A New York man has sued two airlines, seeking damages for injuries he says he incurred when he jumped on a Nigerian man who tried to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner two years ago.

Theophilus Maranga (THEE'-oh-fih-lihs Muh-RAHN'-guh) brought the lawsuit Wednesday in federal court in Manhattan. He named as defendants Delta Airlines, Air France KLM and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (OO'-mahr fah-ROOK' ahb-DOOL'-moo-TAH'-lahb). Abdulmutallab awaits sentencing next month after admitting he tried to blow up the plane with a bomb in his underwear.

Maranga of Wappinger Falls claims the airlines were negligent to let Abdulmutallab on board. He said he suffers numerous injuries after jumping on Abdulmutallab as he tried to bring down a Christmas 2009 Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight with 290 people aboard. Messages left with airlines were not immediately returned.
