Chef John Besh Backs Loan Program to Help Mississippi Farms

Chefs Farm Loans

Oct. 6, 2011: Daniel Mauthe, 19, herds some of Mauthe's Progress Dairy Farm's 14 cows towards the milking barn in Progress, Miss. The Mauthe family plans to use the $20,000 micro-loan from celebrity chef John Besh's foundation to rebuild their business, upgrade equipment and gradually expand their market from the New Orleans area to other parts of Louisiana and Mississippi.

Small farming operations that need help building up their products are getting some help from celebrity chef John Besh.

Besh, a Mississippi native and host of the TLC show "Inedible to Incredible," has set up low-interest loans of up to $20,000 to help local producers build up their businesses.

The program also matches those getting loans with students in the Tulane University MBA program to help them with business plans.

Kenny and Jamie Mauthe of Progress, Miss., were the first to get a loans made available through the John Besh Foundation. Their farm was nearly wiped out after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and the storm forced them to sell off a large portion of their livestock. Now, the Mauthes sell their dairy products in farmers markets and to restaurants.
