AP Interview: On 9/11, cardinal consoles a city

Roman Catholic Cardinal Edward Egan says it's taken him years to talk openly about his role in New York's recovery from 9/11.

Egan is retired as New York's archbishop. He told The Associated Press that then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani and police officials asked him to walk around lower Manhattan as much as possible and pray with people. Egan led services on the steps of parishes in Staten Island and the Bronx where victims had lived. He presided at as many as three funerals a day at St. Patrick's Cathedral. He prayed with recovery workers at ground zero.

But one of Egan's favorite memories is of former Mayor Ed Koch praying at St. Patrick's for a priest he thought had died. Egan was able to tell Koch that the priest had lived.
