WEST POINT, N.Y. -- An 18-year-old West Point cadet has died of unknown causes during a training exercise, the US Military Academy said Friday.
Jacob D. Bower, a member of the Class of 2015, was found unresponsive during a land navigation exercise around Camp Buckner, which is near West Point roughly 55 miles (89 km) north of New York City.
The academy said immediate attempts to revive Bower, a native of Fairmont, W.Va., were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead shortly after 6:00pm.
The cause of his death is under investigation, the academy said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bower family during this difficult time," said Lt. Col. Sherri Reed, an academy public affairs officer, in a statement. "The academy is a close-knit family and the loss of one of our own affects all of us."
The academy noted that Bower was a member of the National Honor Society and had completed the first part of cadet basic training in good standing.
