A married man driving his wife's car mowed down his girlfriend and then left her bleeding in the street as he sped off -- only to wind up critically injured in another crash five hours later, New York authorities said Saturday.

Ricky Pena, 28, of The Bronx, struck the 23-year-old woman with the 2006 Honda Pilot SUV at 3:12am local time on West 46th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues in Midtown Manhattan, then sped away, police said.

Later, at 8:13am, Pena crashed the Honda, which is registered in his wife's name on the Harlem River Drive near 174th Street, police said.

He was rushed to the Harlem Hospital, where he was in serious condition. The hit-and-run victim was taken to the Bellevue Hospital Center in stable condition with a gash on her forehead.

Detectives are still investigating the circumstances of both crashes.
