One person was killed and four others injured in a shooting at the Southern Union State Community College in eastern Alabama Wednesday afternoon, the Opelika Police said.
Three hours later, Thomas Franklin May III walked up to reporters who were covering the story and calmly said he was the man police were after. Within minutes, May was arrested.
He has been charged with capital murder and attempted murder and is being held without bond, according to authorities.
The victims include a 63-year-old woman who was shot dead; a 90-year-old woman who was shot in the neck and back who was airlifted to a hospital in Georgia and a 36-year-old woman who was shot in the arm. A 4-year-old boy was also treated for getting hit with shards of glass.
“The shooter was outside of the car and fired into the vehicle,” Captain Allan Elkins from the Opelika Police, said.
Photos and video from the scene showed a Toyota mini van with three windows shot out in a parking lot outside a building on campus. Student Quay Thomas said he heard nine shots.
"It was terrifying," said the 17-year-old. "I wouldn't think anything like this would happen at a college campus."
Opelika High School, which is across the street from the college, was locked down after the shooting.
Southern Union Interim President Dr. Amelia Pearson told the Opelika-Auburn News that the college’s nursing and pharmacy faculty assist those who were injured.
The campus will remain closed for the evening.
