JACKSON, Miss. – Officials are saying wind and heavy rain has damaged more than 40 homes in central Mississippi and some roads are flooding.
There were no immediate reports of injuries associated with a line of severe thunderstorms sweeping across the Southeast on Wednesday. A tornado touched down in central Florida in Sumter County, but there were only reports of downed power lines.
Mike Edmonston, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, says officials are trying to determine if a tornado hit Simpson County in Mississippi. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says three homes there were destroyed and 40 damaged. Water has flooded eight homes in Scott County.
Edmonston says golf ball-sized hail has been reported throughout Mississippi and in Louisiana.
