The murder trial of an Iraqi immigrant who allegedly killed his daughter with an SUV is now in the hands of an Arizona jury.

Prosecutors allege Faleh Almaleki, 50, intentionally targeted his daughter, Noor, because she had dishonored the family by becoming too Westernized.

Attorneys for Almaleki argue that he ran over his 20-year-old daughter and injured her 41-year-old friend by accident. The victims were struck in October 2009 in a Peoria parking lot. Amal Khalaf survived the attack.

"Did he intend to hurt her? No. Did he intend to scare her? Maybe or something like that," defense attorney Jeff Kirchler told jurors, according to MyFoxPhoenix.com. "When he came around and realized what he had done he panicked and he left."

Almaleki, who chose not to testify, has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and leaving the scene of an accident.

A Maricopa County Superior Court jury is scheduled to begin deliberating Tuesday.
