Hawk trapped in Library of Congress finally caught

A hawk that spent a week living in the dome of the Library of Congress has finally been captured.

Ken Knowles of the Raptor Conservancy of Virginia says the Cooper's hawk got hungry enough Wednesday morning to be lured by some bait — two live starlings.

The hawk first appeared in the library's main reading room Jan. 19. It has been able to evade capture on several attempts.

A net was pulled across the opening of the dome to keep the bird from swooping down at visitors in the reading room. It would also have caught the hawk if it became weak and fell.

Knowles says he wants to give the hawk electrolytes. It will then be transported to the group's facility in Virginia to be examined and eventually released into the wild.
