Two men were charged Monday in connection with the deadly shooting of a Massachusetts police officer during an attempted armed robbery, The Boston Herald reports.

Police Officer John B. "Jack" Maguire was responding to a robbery in progress at a Kohl's store in Woburn, Mass., Sunday night when the 60-year-old veteran cop was shot dead in a gunfight with the suspects. One of the suspects was also killed.

Scott Hanwright, 19, and Kevin Dingwell, 51, both of Wakefield, were detained in connection with the robbery, which occurred near closing time, the newspaper reports.

A third suspect, whom authorities have not yet identified, was shot and killed after opening fire on police.

Hanwright and Dingwell are scheduled to be arraigned later Monday, according to the newspaper.

"This is a horribly tragic incident in which an officer was fatally shot in the line of duty," Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone said in an e-mailed statement.
