I-75 in Kentucky to Honor Tuskegee Airmen

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Interstate 75 in Kentucky has been designated as the "Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Trail."

Gov. Steve Beshear joined local leaders in Frankfort to unveil a memorial naming the 191-mile section of I-75 that passes through Kentucky in honor of the famed Tuskegee Airmen.

Beshear says the memorial will honor the the soldiers' "brave commitment to the safety and freedom of our nation."

The Tuskegee Airmen were America's first black fighter pilot group in World War II. They derived their name from their training at Tuskegee Army Airfield in Alabama.

The governor's statement says the original group of Tuskegee Airmen included 11 Kentucky cadets.
