BOSTON -- A small piece of wood Roman Catholics believe is a piece of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified is believed stolen from Boston's cathedral.
A janitor at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross first noticed that the panel covering a small glass box containing the relic had been pried open and the fragment stolen.
Police think it was taken sometime between 10 a.m. on June 30 and 8 a.m. on July 1. Police tell The Boston Globe that someone probably took it during the day, because there were no signs of forced entry.
Cathedral rector the Rev. Kevin O'Leary says he's praying for the relic's return.
The relic arrived in Boston in the late 18th century, a gift to the Rev. Jean-Louis Lefebvre de Cheverus, who later became Boston's first bishop.
