A man who walked into a Harrisonburg bank claiming to have an explosive device strapped around his waist is in police custody.
City police spokeswoman Mary-Hope Vass says the man was taken into custody Monday afternoon.
Vass says the incident was reported at 9:18 a.m. Employees of the downtown Wachovia Bank were able to walk out unharmed.
A state police bomb squad robot was brought to the scene, and police officers were perched earlier atop surrounding buildings. Authorities are still investigating whether the device was explosive.
The sheriff's department, state police, firefighters and rescue officials, and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded.
Vass says she didn't know if the man was attempting to rob the bank.
