A 12-year-old boy, who is suspected of shooting and killing his mother and stepfather Monday night, was arrested by the Miller County Sheriff's Department and charged in juvenile court with two counts of first-degree murder.
The 26th Judicial Circuit's chief juvenile officer, Tammy Walden, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that a hearing will be held later to determine whether the boy will be tried as an adult or juvenile.
Police were called to Palace Lane Estates mobile home park in the small town of Kaiser, Mo. around 11:50 p.m.
The juvenile called his grandmother, who lived in town, then called 911 to report the shooting of his mother and step-father. The two had multiple gunshot wounds.
Five other children lived in the home, but were not present during the shooting. Their location is not known.
Neighbors described the unidentified boy as "happy" and told the lakenewsonline.com they were shocked and stunned to learn of the incident.
They told the newspaper he got along well with others and a few weeks ago joined other neighborhood kids going to homes asking for donations for their local church youth group.
The boy lived at the home full-time and attended the School of the Osage.
The bodies are in the Columbia at the Boone County Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
