US prosecutors say former FBI agent used position to help pro golfer Greg Norman

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors in California allege that an ex-FBI agent who pleaded guilty to illegally accessing an agency computer also misused his authority to help professional golfer Greg Norman.

Sentencing papers filed Friday in federal court say that Peter Norell Jr. improperly used his position to stop Norman's former business partner, Earl Takefman, from interfering in the golfer's divorce proceedings.

Norell was the head of the FBI's white-collar crime unit in Santa Ana.

The document says Norell used an FBI phone in 2006 to tell Takefman to "keep (his) mouth shut."

Norman did not immediately respond to an e-mail.

Norell is being sentenced Monday for a separate crime in which he threatened to launch a probe to help a friend collect an unpaid debt.
