Unclaimed Veteran Ashes Laid to Rest After 58 Years in N.J.

LEONIA, N.J.-- The cremated remains of 13 veterans that were left in storage at a New Jersey funeral home for nearly 58 years were laid to rest with military honors.

The statewide veterans group New Jersey Mission of Honor held services Wednesday at cemeteries in Leonia and Wrightstown.

Chairman Francis Carrasco says the group was formed 15 months ago after a state law allowed it to pursue the unclaimed ashes of servicemen.

Eight of the 13 veterans served in World War I. Four were in World War II and one served in Vietnam.

Funeral Director Helene Trinka-Faustini says ashes are often abandoned when there is no immediate family members or relatives aren't told of funeral arrangements.
