Once-Barred Muslim Scholar Arrives in New York for Forum

NEW YORK  -- A prominent Muslim scholar banned from the United States for six years has arrived in New York for speaking engagements, saying he's happy to be back.

Oxford University's Tariq Ramadan arrived Wednesday. He speaks Thursday in Manhattan at a panel discussion about Muslims in Europe and the West.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in January lifted the ban for Ramadan and University of Johannesburg scholar Adam Habib. Habib spoke Wednesday at the City University of New York Graduate Center.

Ramadan was kept out of the United States after donating money to a Swiss charity the U.S. said supported the Islamic militant group Hamas. Ramadan said the charity had no connection to Hamas.
