Gov. Walker: Trump a much better alternative than Hillary

This is a rush transcript from "On the Record," July 20, 2016. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, FOX NEWS HOST: Check it out. There's a lot of dancing out there on the floor right now. Tonight is another huge night here at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. Just a few short hours, Wisconsin governor, yes, the great state of Wisconsin, former 2016 presidential candidate, Governor Scott Walker, will take the stage.

Right now, Governor Walker is here to go ON THE RECORD.

Nice to see you, Governor.

WIS. GOV. SCOTT WALKER: Good to see you.

VAN SUSTEREN: I love a guest who brings a prop what do you have.

WALKER: We are going to talk about. America deserves better than Hillary.

VAN SUSTEREN: Why did you bring that prop?

WALKER: We are going to have that out. That's the first time we have seen it out here.

VAN SUSTEREN: Nobody has seen it.

WALKER: Nobody has seen it on the floor yet.

VAN SUSTEREN: So, the ON THE RECORD viewers see it first.

WALKER: That's exactly right. We're going to have that out here on the floor. Wisconsin is right down there. But we're going to do it. And it's really to make the case America does deserve better not only than Hillary but better than we have had the last seven and a half years. That's what we are going to get Donald Trump and my friend Mike Pence.

VAN SUSTEREN: OK. So, first, you ran and then when you got out you endorsed Senator Ted Cruz, he then won our state Wisconsin, he won that state, right?

WALKER: Right.

VAN SUSTEREN: Now you are -- are you endorsing?

WALKER: Absolutely.

VAN SUSTEREN: How do you explain sort of the roving endorsement?

WALKER: I said on this stage almost a year ago, August 6th of last year, that any of the Republicans running would be better than Hillary Clinton. Obviously, Donald Trump wasn't my first choice. I was my first choice.

And as you mentioned, I supported Ted in the primary of Wisconsin. I meant what I said last year any of the Republicans running was infinitely better than Hillary Clinton. And obviously, Trump is our nominee. And he's better than Hillary Clinton.

VAN SUSTEREN: Can you deliver Wisconsin to Donald Trump?

WALKER: Well, I think if he keeps talking about nobody else other than Hillary Clinton and talks about how his plans are going to help every day Americans do better in places like Wisconsin, he can win.

VAN SUSTEREN: What's Wisconsin -- what is the big issue there?

WALKER: Oh, it's still the economy. I mean, you know, we have got more people employed than ever before. Still gaps in people in Wisconsin like there are across this country who haven't had a wage increase in six, seven, eight, nine years.

We need to have a better policy. We don't have it under Barack Obama. I think Donald Trump is in a position where he will take on Washington, send power back to the states and more importantly back to the American people.

VAN SUSTEREN: You know, there's so much intrigue with Ted Cruz tonight whether or not he actually endorses, that we forget this is a big night for the vice presidential nominee.

WALKER: Huge.

VAN SUSTEREN: Do you know Pence?

WALKER: I know Mike very well. In fact Mike is probably one of my closest friends. We text often once or twice a week. I talk to do him today at noon. He's pumped up and excited.

I think America is going to see not just the person we have heard about in the news. Yes, he's a full spectrum conservative that's great for the base. Also just good, decent honorable person who is going to be outstanding counsel to the next president.

VAN SUSTEREN: You know, people know him because he was in Congress. People in Indiana know him because he was governor. But he really does seem sort of new to the national stage.

WALKER: You know, a lot of people are surprised but if you look at his background, well-respected by his colleagues when he was in Congress in both parties even though he is clearly a conservative. As governor, he is not -- got the lowest unemployment rate in 15 years in the state of Indiana. He's going to do not only well in the industrial Midwest, but I think people -- they're looking to get a glimpse as to how Donald Trump would govern as president. This pick we're going to hear from tonight I think shows that he is serious about governing.

VAN SUSTEREN: What do you think we will hear from Donald Trump tomorrow night?

WALKER: I hope we hear about the contrast between him and Hillary. The contrast about how much better is he going to make America, about how a little bit about what we heard. I hope we hear a lot more from his children, because his son last night was dynamite. I think we hear more about that. Hear about his vision for everyone in America. He's going to do extremely well not just bump but.

VAN SUSTEREN: Go Pack?

WALKER: Go Pack go.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right. Governor, thank you very much for joining us.
