My mom used to say that the secret to having a great life isn't what you do, but how you do it, how you stand out. How you set yourself apart.
So much of what we do in life is routine, then someone breaks that routine.
Like a Georgia Tech student welcoming freshmen as they embark on a school year, not with a speech, but with something much more.
Have a look.
Nicholas Selby, Georgia Institute of Technology student: Georgia Tech is proud of its many traditions, but the one I find most exciting is our tradition of excellence. Our mission as students is not to follow in the footsteps of the astronauts, Nobel Prize Laureates, and presidents who graduated before us, but to exceed their footsteps, crush the shoulders of the giants upon whom we stand! We here are all such innovative people. So I am telling you, if you want to change the world, you're at Georgia Tech, you can do that! If you want to build the Iron Man suit, you're at Georgia Tech--you can do that! If you want to play theme music during your convocation speech like a badass, we're at Georgia Tech--we can do that! I am doing that!
Now that's a speech kids are going to remember.
But it needn't be kids. And it needn't be at just colleges.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer forever etched himself into my personal boss hall of fame seven years ago when he turned an otherwise boring corporate event into something unforgettable.
Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO: (Dancing accompanied by shouting) Who said sit down? I have four words for you. I love this company! Yes!
Ballmer got a lot of ribbing for that.
And I'm sure, so will Nicholas Selby.
He--the aspiring motivational nerd-god.
Channeling that still very much motivated billionaire nerd-god.
Each in their moment, jarring us in that moment.
Making us laugh. Making us sit up. Making us notice.
We could do worse in a world where so many of us seem to be just going through the motions.
To show emotion. To get emotional.
Whether high-fiving a school we love.
Or gleefully shedding the button-down corporate image we do not.
Share it. Love it. Shout it.
Because life is short.
Go for it!
