Gutfeld: Liberal bias on full display in 'The Newsroom'

Second season of HBO show covers Occupy Wall Street, Tea Party

GREG GUTFELD, CO-HOST: So I just saw the trailer for the loon bin called "The Newsroom." And you know what they're covering? Something evil called the Tea Party.

(BEGIN HBO VIDEO CLIP)

MARCIA GAY HARDEN AS REBECCA HALLIDAY: Fourteen months, you have been on the air and called the Tea Party the American Taliban.

JEFF DANIELS AS WILL MCAVOY: I did.

HARDEN: What happened then?

DANIELS: A lot.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR: Three, two, rolling.

DANIELS: Good evening. I'm Will McAvoy and this is news night.

SAM WATERSTON AS CHARLIE SKINNER: You're going to be condemned on the House floor tomorrow.

DANIELS: That's a good use of time.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR: It seems like when we called them the American Taliban, they mind it.

GUTFELD: Wait. So, a news anchor is hassled for going after the Tea Party? Please, you would get a promotion at the White House for that.

But what of Occupy Wall Street?

(BEGIN HBO VIDEO CLIP)

DEV PATEL AS NEAL SAMPAT: I believe America is on the verge of its own Arab Spring.

EMILY MORTIMER AS MACKENZIE MCHALE: What was that called again?

PATEL: Occupy Wall Street.

GUTFELD: When was this written? Before the rapes, murders, before OWS disappeared? So, Hollywood gets it wrong. If "Newsroom" covered Roman Polanski's crimes, they would change a 13-year-old girl to 13-year-old scotch.

But you've got to love how the show has the Tea Party sympathizers targeting free speech, when in real life, it's the Tea Party that's targeted. But that's the great thing about TV, whatever fails in reality is resurrected in lib land as the victor.

It's why Robert Redford recasts terrorists as teddy bears and bank robbers become besties. I can't wait until Kermit Gosnell becomes a kind, elderly doctor helping the underclass, and Ariel Castro is cast as a passionate teen counselor and Jeffrey Dahmer, an eccentric chef.

No wonder why left wing teachers are always heroic, while all these activists are hygienic. And also, why there are no sympathetic conservative characters on TV.

But who knows, maybe one day they will have a prominent right winger featured in a show. It will be a biography on Hitler.

Bob, what's your take. I -- when I watched "Newsroom" it is like a liberal fantasy. Do you watch it, go, oh, that would be my perfect world?

BOB BECKEL, CO-HOST: You know, I watch it and a lot of it I like. Here is one of the problems with liberal entertainment, if I could offer up my view as a liberal, is when you start using words like calling the Tea Party Taliban, that's when we get ourselves in trouble. You can disagree with them, which I do. You can, you know, find them to be outrageous, which I do. I was supporter of Occupy Wall Street but didn't fall in love with them. You know, when they did that to the cop car.

You've got to be careful how you portray yourselves, which is what you're doing, portraying yourself, which the rest of us have to get into Greg's oh, everybody is like that.

But yes. I think they're setting themselves up.

GUTFELD: Eric, do you think the Tea Party will ever get a fair shake from anyone in Hollywood?

ERIC BOLLING, CO-HOST: No. They villainize the Tea Party, hold occupy communist freaks on a pedestal. Wasn't Jeff Daniels in "Dumb and Dumber"?

GUTFELD: Yes.

BOLLING: Was he Lloyd or Harry?

GUTFELD: I can't tell. That was a classic.

(CROSSTALK)

ANDREA TANTAROS, CO-HOST: This is the sequel.

GUTFELD: Yes. What do you think, Andrea?

TANTAROS: I think that Aaron Sorkin is an incredibly talented writer, but he would be more talented if he portrayed things as they were. It's always opposite day on his programs.

I just have two questions, too. Why does everybody talk like this in his television shows, why is the lighting so dark? Why are the lights always off, Greg?

GUTFELD: I don't know. It was great. I liked "Social Network." That's the only thing I liked from him, Kimberly.

TANTAROS: He can be good.

GUTFELD: What happened to OWS? Where is it?

KIMBERLY GUILFLOYLE, CO-HOST: Went down the toilet.

GUTFELD: I wish they had a toilet.

GUILFOYLE: Exactly. The only thing they haven't come with is the violent attitude towards women, rapes that happened --

TANTAROS: Lack of hygiene.

GUILFOYLE: Yes. I mean, just ridiculous the way they glorified it. What is the Tea Party, you know, guilty of? Free speech? Wanting smaller government? Not wanting an out of control IRS?

GUTFELD: Hey, can I just jump in here, you mentioned "Dumb and Dumber." Bad news for Jim Carrey fans. "Dumb and Dumber To" spelled T-O, clever, has been cancelled. It was originally supposed to be the next sequel, but because of Carrey's lagging career, perhaps because he insulted half of America with an anti-gun owner video and danced all over Charlton Heston's grave, they decided to kill the movie.

Is that a tragedy for America or a success?

BECKEL: I bet you must be breaking your heart.

GUILFOYLE: I know. You're reigniting your fight with him, your feud?

BECKEL: You singlehandedly took on Jim Carrey and you singlehandedly responded back, and boy did that open up.

I thought "Dumb and Dumber", the original one was pretty funny.

GUTFELD: It was.

BOLLING: Hilarious.

BECKEL: But I don't know, would I like a sequel to it? No.

GUILFOYLE: Not when you deal with it in real life, not so charming.

BECKEL: Occupy Wall Street, as much as you say, the rapes and the rest of the stuff that was bad that happened, they have as much right to protest their government.

GUILFOYLE: Peacefully, and nonviolently, not committing crimes against women.

(CROSSTALK)

BECKEL: I think they should not be denigrated.

TANTAROS: They were trying to root for the little guy. And it turned out the little guy, the cop, union worker, was the one cleaning up their poop, cleaning up their messes down there. They had no respect, they had no real message.

And, by the way, the Arab spring has been a complete disaster. Occupy Wall Street didn't last long enough to be a complete disaster.
