Some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:
End of an Era
Hillary Clinton's departure from the State Department marks a milestone for Washington. Saturday will be the first day in 32 years and two weeks that a Bush or Clinton has not been a part of the White House administration. That's 11,702 days that a member of one of the two families has served as president, vice-president or secretary of state.
On January 19, 1981, George H.W. Bush started it all when he was sworn in as vice president.
Updating some stories in our Friday Follow-up segment:
Under the Radar
President Obama's uncle has been scheduled for a deportation hearing.
Onyango Obama was issued a deportation order 21 years ago, but he is still living in the U.S. His status came to the attention of authorities in 2011 when he was arrested for drunken driving. This week, a judge ordered a deportation hearing for December 3.
Onyango Obama came to the U.S. from Kenya in October 1963 for school. He was supposed to leave in 1970.
Keep Calm and Leave Us Alone
On Wednesday we told you about the proposed ad blitz by Great Britain to try to convince Eastern Europeans not to immigrate to England. One British minister suggested launching the negative campaign in Romania and Bulgaria, pointing out the downsides of life in England.
Now a Romanian newspaper has put out an ad of its own with the message -- who would want to move to your rainy, cloudy country anyway?
It calls into question why anyone would leave a country where -- quote -- "half the women look like Kate, the other half like her sister." Another ad reads: "Our draft beer is cheaper than your bottled water."
Putin Plays Cupid
Vladimir Putin is one of our favorites here on the Grapevine and once again he has delivered.
The Russian president has long encouraged Russian families to have at least three children. Now he's bringing in some soulful voices for his fertility campaign: Boyz II Men.
The Moscow Times reports -- quote -- "The stylish trio of Boyz II Men -- the most successful R-and-B group of all time -- is coming to Moscow, hopefully giving Russian men some inspiration ahead of Saint Valentine's Day."
Russia's past efforts to increase production include one province declaring a "Conception Day" holiday in 2007. Women who gave birth nine months later were entered for a chance to win a refrigerator.
How romantic.
