Obama Off on Media Coverage Facts?

And now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:

Critic's Corner

When President Obama announced he was releasing his long-form birth certificate, he chided the media's coverage of the controversy saying that story filled the headlines instead of the budget debate -- quote -- "Two weeks ago... the dominant news story wasn't about these huge monumental choices... It was about my birth certificate."

But the Poynter Institute says the economy accounted for 39 percent of news coverage during the week the president referenced. The birth certificate issue just 4 percent.

Step Right Up!

Another group is taking issue with something else the president said about the "birther" story.

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: We're not going to be able to solve our problems if we get distracted by sideshows and carnival barkers.

The Huffington Post reports the carnival community is not amused, decrying what it considers a negative stereotype -- quote -- "You wouldn't expect those comments from someone who is a minority and has faced prejudice."

Trumped Up

Prospective GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump has received a lot of attention for pushing the birth certificate story. But he's also getting a lot of scrutiny now too.

Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul joked to a Republican group in New Hampshire -- quote -- "I want to see the original long-form certificate of Donald Trump's Republican registration."

And there's more pressure from former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs who is asking for the real estate mogul's tax records -- quote -- "Donald Trump said he'd release his tax returns as soon as the president released his birth certificate... so the ball is now in his court."

Trump's response -- quote -- "Gibbs is a loser."

The Silk Road

Trump is also getting criticized for something else. He has frequently accused China of stealing manufacturing jobs from the U.S. Now Trump is acknowledging that many of his clothing and accessory line products are made in China.

Trump told ABC News that is because China manipulates its currency making it almost impossible for American companies to compete.
