Obama White House a Hostile Work Environment?

Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:

It's a Man's World?

Top female advisers felt the Obama White House was a "boys' club" that excluded and ignored women in key conversations. Those allegations are in Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Ron Suskind's new book "Confidence Men."

Suskind interviewed more than 200 people, including many top officials and President Obama. The Washington Post reports former communications director Anita Dunn says in the book -- quote - "This place would be in court for a hostile workplace because it actually fit all of the classic legal requirements for a genuinely hostile workplace to women."

However, Dunn denies the White House is a hostile environment now. The administration is citing the book's factual errors and claims a portion was lifted from Wikipedia.

Mr. Mayor

One of those mentioned in Suskind's book is former chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, who has moved on to Chicago's mayor.

The Chicago Tribune has a largely positive piece on Emanuel's -- quote -- "personal approach" to governing. It includes a description of a phone conversation between Emanuel and Democratic State Representative Greg Harris who opposed a piece of legislation that Emanuel was pushing.

The Tribune writes -- "Emanuel pressed Harris to change his mind and, according to several lawmakers who heard the story, began swearing at him and threatening to burn down his house if he didn't."

Harris does not dispute the story and told The Tribune -- quote -- "sometimes things get intense."

Electric Slide

Owners of a wind farm in Great Britain were paid more than $1.8 million to stop producing electricity for eight hours last weekend.

The Telegraph reports the move was prompted by fears Britain's network would be overloaded because of high winds after Hurricane Katia.

There are calls for an official investigation into the payment system since the compensation was 10 times the amount the company would have earned had the wind farm been operating.
