BILL O'REILLY, FOX NEWS HOST: "Personal Story" segment tonight, at one time, Roseanne Barr was the biggest TV star in the country. But for the past few years, Ms. Barr has been living on the big island in Hawaii, running a macadamia nut farm. I kid you not.
She has a new book out called "Roseannearchy: Dispatches from the Nut Farm." I spoke with her last night.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
O'REILLY: Let's trace your political evolution. Were you always a liberal?
ROSEANNE BARR, ACTRESS: I am not a liberal.
O'REILLY: Yes.
BARR: I hate liberals.
O'REILLY: You hate them?
BARR: I hate them just like you do.
O'REILLY: I don't hate liberals.
BARR: Well, I don't hate them either.
O'REILLY: Absolutely.
BARR: I don't hate them either. But no, I'm like -- I was raised a socialist. My family are socialists. They're not liberals. They were socialists.
O'REILLY: You were raised in a socialist family in Utah.
BARR: Yes.
O'REILLY: And you, I guess, were the only one in history, because Utah is not really known...
BARR: There wasn't many.
O'REILLY: So your family, you were socialist, and you would adhere to the socialistic point of view?
BARR: No, I -- I'm just for solutions. I'm like -- I'm for rebranding things.
O'REILLY: Rebranding?
BARR: Yes, I am for rebranding. Everything is about branding. And you know, like, instead of saying liberal or, you know, anything like that, or socialist, I just say people-ist.
O'REILLY: People-ist?
BARR: Yes.
O'REILLY: OK. But you're hard on people like Sarah Palin. You say that she's not looking out for the folks?
BARR: Well, I'm mad because she -- she's stealing my act. I really feel like she's stealing my act.
O'REILLY: Populist, regular?
BARR: She talks like me, but I mean, she is kind of from around where I'm from, but I don't like that she's just all for self -- all for the rich people. And she's not for anything like...
O'REILLY: But how do you know she's all for the rich people?
BARR: Because she says so.
O'REILLY: It seems to me -- and I know Ms. Palin, because she works for us -- that she is genuinely interested in the welfare of working people, as you say you are. I think you guys have common ground there. But you...
BARR: I think we have common ground, too. I do think we have common -- I think all Americans have common ground. And if we stopped, like, agitating and just trying to keep getting divided so that we never really solve any problem...
O'REILLY: But you're one of the big agitators.
BARR: Well, I'm not...
O'REILLY: You know, is this a new year's resolution?
BARR: I do have a new year's resolution. Stop controversial blogging and lose weight.
O'REILLY: All right. Because you have been agitating. And you don't like Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan!
BARR: No!
O'REILLY: You don't like him!
BARR: I don't like him. I don't -- I don't like the -- I don't like him. No.
O'REILLY: What did he do wrong?
BARR: He cut all the social programs and destroyed the entire, you know, infrastructure of the whole social safety net for working-class people.
O'REILLY: I didn't -- I didn't really see that he did that. I mean, he was certainly a self-reliance guy and a smaller government guy.
BARR: He...
O'REILLY: He didn't do anything. Reagan did nothing.
BARR: No, he sold our country off...
O'REILLY: Ow!
BARR: ... piece by piece to the Chinese. He made everything...
O'REILLY: Well, why aren't we speaking Chinese today, then? That was 25 years ago.
BARR: Because we have a nice country where everything was working jut fine, till that guy got in there and started selling everything out from under us.
O'REILLY: But why aren't we speaking Chinese if he sold us out to the Chinese?
BARR: Well, I did tell my son if he would learn Chinese, I would buy him a Lamborghini. I did say that.
O'REILLY: That's a little off topic, but...
BARR: Also, I said...
O'REILLY: I don't know if I'm really buying that he sold us out to the Chinese.
BARR: Come on. Everybody knows that.
O'REILLY: Everybody knows it?
BARR: Everybody on the left.
O'REILLY: You and Sean Penn, and who else knows it?
BARR: Sean Penn? It all started the downfall...
O'REILLY: You believe the downfall started with Ronald Reagan?
BARR: Let's just ask -- answer the question: are most Americans doing better or worse?
O'REILLY: OK, under President Obama they're doing worse, so they say.
BARR: Since 1980.
O'REILLY: I think most Americans have lived better since -- in the last 30 years. I think most Americans are living better. Even poor people have big TVs and air-conditioning.
BARR: Oh, my God! You're hilarious.
O'REILLY: They do. Surveys show that most people below the poverty line have air-conditioning and television. Did you know that?
BARR: No, I didn't.
O'REILLY: That's part of the socialistic vision, is it not?
BARR: Then there's no problem at all.
O'REILLY: And you and I through our taxes have provided that. Health care.
BARR: Listen, you're all the time talking about European style socialism.
O'REILLY: Yes.
BARR: I'm for it. They live like kings over there.
O'REILLY: I know. Greece is doing real well.
BARR: They get six -- well, not since we gave all the money to bankers at the top. Why did we do that?
O'REILLY: You said they live real well in Europe, and I'm saying Greece and Ireland, my people, they're going under.
BARR: Well, now.
O'REILLY: Now. They did live well.
BARR: After we had to give all the money that we had to the rich. Of course.
O'REILLY: So in Greece and Ireland we gave all the money to the rich?
BARR: They are -- they were victims of bad banking just like America.
O'REILLY: Is that our part? Did we -- did we do it, America? Did we do it?
BARR: The same guys are the ones who do it all over the world.
O'REILLY: All over.
BARR: You know what I want to do because I am socialist, and I do have, like, my ideals and such and such? You know what I want to do, Bill?
O'REILLY: What?
BARR: Charity farms. That's an idea I have.
O'REILLY: Charity farms.
BARR: Yes.
O'REILLY: And give the food to the poor people?
BARR: Yes.
O'REILLY: I'll help you with that.
BARR: You would?
O'REILLY: Absolutely. Do you know how much money we give away here on "The Factor," just selling our gear and gizmos? We give millions of dollars away here.
BARR: I will really take you up on that. Because I just thought that was a good way to, like, live my beliefs. My book, "Roseannearchy," is about living your beliefs. If you're going to say something, back it up.
O'REILLY: All right. And we respect that, Ms. Barr. We appreciate you coming on here.
BARR: Then you're serious that you're going to help?
O'REILLY: You get your little charity farm going, we'll help you out on it.
BARR: You're a doll. Thanks a lot.
O'REILLY: Everybody knows that.
BARR: Is he telling me the truth? OK.
