The ideological component of the Spitzer story is the subject of this evening's "Talking Points Memo."

It took moments for the far-left movement to get busy on Spitzer yesterday. NBC News trotted out a bunch of people who bemoaned the fact that prostitution isn't legal here in the USA. It's simply stunning how far NBC News has fallen.

On the Huffington Post hate site, the following postings appeared. A viewer warning, one of them is very anti-Semitic:

"Remember everyone: Any Democratic scandal retroactively clears George Bush of torture and war crimes."

"I wonder if this knowledge originated as one of George Bush's warrantless Homeland Security taps of Democrats."

"There's the silly ol' Israeli connection again. It just keeps popping up: Lewinsky, Abramoff, Chertoff, Perle, Feith, Wolfowitz, Kissinger, Pollard."

Well, the far left hits just kept on coming. Arianna Huffington must be very proud.

Keep in mind that every time a Republican or a clergyman gets into trouble, these same far-left loons gleefully join in the witch-burning. Hypocritical doesn't even begin to cover it.

On the gleeful front, the late night guys went to town.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JAY LENO: New York Governor Eliot Spitzer admitted publicly he was involved in a prostitution ring, which means Hillary Clinton is now only the second angriest wife in the state of New York.

DAVID LETTERMAN: Right about now, Spitzer is huddling with his advisers to develop a drinking problem. That's what he's going to do.

JON STEWART: He was caught on a wiretap. The kind most likely authorized by the law and order governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer. Oops.

DAVID LETTERMAN: Did you happen to see the press conference? Very dramatic. Eliot Spitzer was there. He had yellow crime scene tape draped around his pants. It was crazy.

CONAN O'BRIEN: I violated my obligations to my family, and I violated my sense of right and wrong. That was a quote, yes. Spitzer also admitted violating someone named Amber.

Eliot Spitzer broke the law, so he has to resign as governor. There's no comparing what he did to any civil or private action, including the situations of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton. When you are the chief law enforcement officer of a state and you violate criminal law, you've got to go. Period.

And finally, watching the famous and powerful blow up has now become a national sport, an industry of delight. Something is disturbing about that because so many innocent folks are hurt in any scandal, but we Americans like the action and the press lives for it, so that's not going to change. There's no sympathy here for Eliot Spitzer, but his family is another matter. How awful.

That's "The Memo."

Pinheads & Patriots

Singer John Mellencamp was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame last night. Now, we don't agree with Mellencamp's very liberal view of the world, but his songs are great. So he is a patriot in that regard.

On the pinhead front, bad word alert. The traveling circus promoting "The Vagina Monologues" play showed up in New Orleans, and Mayor Nagin was there to pander.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

RAY NAGIN, MAYOR OF NEW ORLEANS: I was absolutely blown away at how awesome this work is. I mean, she is doing God's work. So I stand before you, a vagina-friendly mayor. I am in.

Pinhead.
