Coast Guard responding to report of oil spill off Louisiana's coast

The Coast Guard says it is responding to a report of a collision between a boat and an inactive oil wellhead, which is now discharging an oily-water mixture.Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders received a report that the 42-foot crewboat Sea Raider hit a wellhead -- located nine miles southwest of Port Sulphur -- on Tuesday evening, according to a statement posted on the USCG's digital newsroom .Well owner Swift Energy Co. of Houston said the well was intermittently burping oily water on Wednesday, probably from a damaged valve.Company President Bruce Vincent said the wellhead about a mile offshore is ringed with containment boom, which also was set along the shore, and two skimmer boats were at work. Crews began ringing the wellhead Tuesday night, he said.Vincent said only a small amount of oil appears to have escaped the well.
