2012 Olympics: Great Britain Captures First Gold Medal In Women's Pair

Great Britain has finally sealed its first gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics, winning the first rowing final of Wednesday in the women's pair. Helen Glover and Heather Stanning, rowing with a massive partisan crowd behind them, got out to a lead early and held on for the entire 2000-meter race to win gold in their first Olympics. Not only was this Great Britain's first gold of the games, it's also the country's first medal ever in women's rowing. Neither are veterans in the sport and Glover just took up the sport four years ago. They were over a length ahead of their competition by the 500-meter mark and defeated their competition by over a length in a time of 7:27:13.Kate Hornsey and Sarah Tait of Australia captured the silver medal, coming in just more than 2 seconds after Glover and Stanning. Rebecca Scown and Juliette Haigh of New Zealand will take home a bronze medal. For more on the London 2012 games, check out SB Nation's 2012 Olympics hub ....
