Saddam Hussein Abd al-Majid al-Tikriti (Arabic: '; 28 April 1937 – 30 December 2006) was the fifth President of Iraq, serving in this capacity from 16 July 1979 until 9 April 2003. A leading member of the revolutionary Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, and later, the Baghdad-based Ba'ath Party and its regional organisation Ba'ath Party – Iraq Region, which espoused ba'athism, a mix of Arab nationalism and Arab socialism, Saddam played a key role in the 1968 coup, later referred to as the 17 July Revolution, that brought the party to long-term power of Iraq.

Iraq energy auction ends with 3 of 12 lots sold, tough contracts for unexplored areas blamed

Iraq's government signed deals for only three of 12 oil and natural gas exploration sites offered in a two-day energy auction that ended Thursday, reflecting reluctance of foreign bidders to risk their money in unexplored areas.

The auction was Iraq's fourth since 2009 and was meant to attract foreign investment in the country's crucial energy sector, particularly natural gas exploration. In previous rounds, bidders competed for known oil and gas fields.The lukewarm response was also blamed on tough contract terms set by the Iraqi government. Companies are paid a flat fee in so-called service contracts, rather than receiving a share of the oil and gas they find.Oil Ministry spokesman Assem Jihad said the government is not disheartened.
