Brain cells start to die when the blood flow to one's brain is disrupted, depriving the brain vital nutrients and oxygen. This interruption may be caused by a clot (ischemic stroke) or a blood vessel that has burst (hemorrhagic stroke).In the United States, stroke is the leading cause of serious long-term disability, and the fourth most common cause of death, reports the American Heart Association .Types Ninety percent of strokes are ischemic. When the arteries leading to the brain are blocked or narrowed, blood flow is halted or reduced, causing an immediate and dire loss of brain cells.
