10 Azerbaijanis to prison after headscarf rally

A court in Azerbaijan has convicted and sentenced 10 people for breaching public order following a violent protest against a ban on wearing headscarves in school.The Nariman District Court in the capital of Baku handed out prison terms Monday that ranged from 18 months to two years in this mainly Muslim ex-Soviet nation.October's protest in front of the Education Ministry building in Baku ended in clashes between demonstrators using sticks and stones and baton-wielding police who moved to clear the area. Last month, another eight people accused of being involved in the clashes were sentenced to prison terms ranging from five to six years.The secular government of the energy-rich Caspian Sea nation has shown little tolerance for dissent....
