Syracuse center Fab Melo declared ineligible

Syracuse center Fab Melo will miss the NCAA Tournament because of an eligibility issue.The school would not provide further details, citing student privacy laws.Melo missed three games earlier this season because of a similar problem, said to be related to academics. The Orange were undefeated at the time and lost to Notre Dame in their first game without the sophomore. Syracuse won the next two games before Melo was reinstated.The 7-foot native of Brazil started 30 games this season and averaged 7.8 points with a team-best 5.8 rebounds. He was honored as the Defensive Player of the Year in the Big East, averaging 3.7 blocks during conference play.Syracuse will open the NCAA Tournament as the top seed in the East Region on Thursday against UNC-Asheville.The Orange faced a similar situation two years ago as a top seed in the NCAA Tournament, losing center Arinze Onuaku to a leg injury.
