Compare smartwatch features
Q. I am interested in a smartwatch. How does the Apple Watch compare to the Moto 360, Samsung Gear and LG? I heard you talk about this on your national radio show.
A. You forgot a few other popular smartwatch makers, including Pebble and Sony. The basic differences are in the price, operating system, battery life, display size and type. Also, some smartwatches require a phone nearby to work. I did the heavy lifting for you. Click here to compare features the easy way by using my Smartwatch Comparison Chart. By the way, you can catch up on something you heard by listening to my show’s podcast or watching the show on demand. Learn more about that here.
Easy way to translate foreign languages
Q. I have foreign-speaking workers at my home this week. What's the best smartphone translator?
A. Google Translate is the app to beat at the moment for real-time translation. It can translate words and phrases from more than 80 languages on the spot. You can type, speak or handwrite with a stylus to enter a phrase. You can also take a picture of a sign or other text. Either way, Translate will quickly convert the text to another language and then you can have it read the text out loud. Try it. It’s amazing and free!
Secure business Wi-Fi network
Q. I would like to offer free Wi-Fi as a perk at my business for employees and customers. I’m worried about hackers. Help me Kim!
A. Security firm Sophos found that in many cities, only 17 percent of businesses had strong security in place. Nearly 25 percent didn't even have security turned on at all (and we're not talking about coffee shops). You want a Wi-Fi network that is totally secure and using the correct protocols. You don't want Wi-Fi users on the same network as your employees or mission-critical computers and files. Even if they don't mean to cause problems, their gear might have viruses that could invade your network. Click here for the steps to take as well as ways to spot hacker networks masquerading as yours.
Moving from Apple to Android
Q. I just switched from Apple to Android phones. Where do I start?
A. Before you do anything else with your new Android phone, you need to create a Google account. Your Google account is what Android uses to back up your contacts, access Google Play to get apps, and more. I was going to type up long instructions for moving your data from Apple to Android, but it turns out Google already did it for me. Click here to visit the insider guide that covers transferring photos, email, music and contacts. While we’re on the subject, if you are switching from Android to Apple, here’s the information you need.
Make money watching TV
Q. I was listening to your national radio show on WSB 750 AM in Atlanta. Was I dreaming when I heard you say that I can make money by watching TV?
A. If you’re also dreaming of fast cars, mansions, and exotic vacations, this is not the way. A little extra money is all you’ll get. Viggle is like a modern TV Guide, but with interactive features and rewards for watching your favorite shows. Viggle can figure out what show you're watching just by listening to the dialogue. There are also live chats to discuss your favorite shows and questions about the show you're currently watching. The longer you watch Viggle-supported shows, the more points you earn. You can then redeem these points for rewards like gift cards to major stores. Not your style? Click here for ways to make money by giving your opinions or shopping.
