Apple’s Eddy Cue touts ‘best product pipeline’ in 25 years

Hours after Apple announced its biggest acquisition, a top executive said the company is poised to release a flurry of new products.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet software and services, told the Code Conference Wednesday evening that Apple’s scheduled product releases through the end of this year are “the best product pipeline” he has seen in 25 years at the company.

He declined to detail any specific projects, but talked up Apple’s efforts in television, cloud storage and music – the subject of its planned $3 billion acquisition of Beats Electronics, announced Wednesday.

“We don’t try to do too many things. We want to do a few really incredible things,” Cue said. “I believe certain products we’ve got coming are great.”

Cue’s comments could fuel speculation that Apple plans a wearable computer or a TV set this year. Either move would be its first attempt to enter a new product category since Chief Executive Tim Cook took the reins in 2011. Though Apple continues to produce strong financial results, the bulk of its revenue comes from products launched years ago and critics have questioned its ability to innovate in new areas.
