Zombies? Natural disasters? Whatever apocalyptic event you fear, one smart solution can keep you secure.
Military supply company Gerber showed off the GO Bag -- a smart ergonomic pack with the company’s battle-proven gear -- at the largest gun show in the world, the annual SHOT show in Las Vegas, where every major gun manufacturer on earth meets to show off 12.5 miles of firearms, ammunition and related gear.
The GO Bag has been carefully designed to ensure everything is close at hand and easy to access in the event of a zombie onslaught or Katrina-level disaster. It aims to make you unstoppable, ensuring you’ve got key essentials to tackle whatever comes your way.
In addition to a smart, light-weight water bottle, it includes six tactical gear items, a smart foundation for your “bug-out” bag.
There’s a reason militaries the world over love the multi-tool MP600 – it’s known for being able to solve just about any problem and even make quick adjustments to the front sight post on a rifle.
This GO bag includes a new version known as the Sight Tool.
It still has the same one-handed opening technology warfighters love, and still weighs a mere 8.2 ounces, but this version also introduces a longer Phillips driver, a combined serrated and fine edge blade, a carbon scraper for weapons maintenance and a newly designed, super-durable front sight adjustment tool.
Every go-bag needs a tough, rugged knife with a strong blade; Gerber’s comes equipped with the DPSF that ticks all the boxes. The American-made lock-back knife has an easy to use one-handed opening. The 2.8 ounce tool has a 3.5 inch serrated blade and a fine blade, and it’s just 8 inches long.
Recon task light
A reliable flashlight is fundamental to emergency preparedness. The Recon Task Light’s L.E.D format uses D.I.A.L., Diode Illumination Adjustable Lens, a design that means you can dial in one of four colors as you need it for each purpose. For general situations it has a white light and to preserve night vision it has red. It also includes a blue light to identify fluids and a green light for map reading.
Keep your weapon ready
It’s hard not to heart FrogLube -- in addition to having the best weapon-maintenance product on the market, the company also gives a portion of proceeds to three very worthy causes the Navy SEAL Warrior Foundation, Lone Survivor Foundation and Troops Direct.
FrogLube’s pioneering new “green” gun cleaner, lubricant and preservative is made in the USA, biodegradable, non-toxic and non-flammable.
Notes on the go
The Gerber GO Bag smartly includes a Rite in the Rain notepad. The company makes excellent all-weather writing paper that sheds water and enables you to write anywhere, in any weather.
While pencils work, you may want to consider a Rite in the Rain all weather pen as well. The Trekker, retailing for $21, writes on wet paper, upside down and even in extreme temperatures, from -30 F to 250 F.
Pocket Reference Guide
A book? Sure it sounds boring, but what would you do if the Internet suddenly became unavailable?
Help is at hand with this tiny book jammed pack with useful information. Say your friend gets frostbite and your smartphone is off. What do you do? Boom. The guide knows all.
The Gerber GO Bag is a great start, and it has plenty of space for other necessities. I’d recommend Arc’Teryx for smart apparel essentials, Zippo to ensure you can light a fire, Camelback’s new water purifier and Leupold’s binoculars.
