Is Myspace the hot new social network?

In the grey days of prehistory, back when Facebook was just a dream in Mark Zuckerberg’s mind, Myspace was the hit network, attracting over 75 million unique users. When it was bought from News Corp. in 2010, that number was at 33 million and dropping.

Since December, when the company introduced a new music player, sign ups have skyrocketed, the New York Times first reported -- and the company on Monday, Feb. 13, officially announced that more than one million new users had joined the growing service.

“The numbers tell an amazing story of strong momentum and dramatic change for Myspace,” said Tim Vanderhook, CEO of Myspace, in a press release announcing the new user numbers. “And the one million-plus new user accounts we’ve seen in the last 30 days validates our approach.”

The site attributed the new users largely to a new music player, called the Myspace Music Player, which it said offered the largest online catalogue of free music in the world.

“MySpace is building meaningful social entertainment experience around content, where consumers can share and discover the music they love. Consumers are getting excited about Myspace again - a testament to a great music product,” Vanderhook said.

The music player offers 42 million songs, according to the company,. As well as a recommendation engine that will suggest relevant music you might like.

It also integrates smoothly with Facebook.
