A passenger train bound for the Indonesian capital crashed into another train stopped at a station early Saturday, killing at least 13 people and injuring more than 25, a railway official said.
Rescue workers at the crash site on Java Island were checking to see if more bodies or injured passengers remained trapped in the wreckage of the trains, which were carrying more than 1,000 people between them, said a local railway official who identified himself as Sarni.
He said that 13 people were killed and at least 26 were injured.
Officials were investigating the cause of the accident at Gubuk station, about 275 miles east of the capital, Jakarta. Sarni said it appeared the moving train was able to brake before it smashed into the stationary one.
Train accidents are common on Indonesia's aging railway network, especially at crossings. Last year, a family of 12 was killed when a train crashed into a minibus on Java and on average dozens die each year in similar accidents.
