Cape Henlopen State Park's nature center manager says there is a rare, mostly white, piebald deer wandering around the park.
Richard Julian says the 2-year-old female is almost 100 percent white, except for faint brown spots on her back and her brown face. She is not an albino.
The deer has a genetic variation that changes the coloration of normal white-tail deer to include large white spots. The variation also causes some deformities such as shorter legs or a misshapen snout.
Julian says about one percent of all white-tail deer have the mutation. He says it was probably passed along by a buck carrying the genetic variation.
