A Jacksonville nurse plans to sue the hospital where she works over the treatment she received for an infection that nearly killed her and caused her to lose fingers and parts of her legs.

Jean Law said Tuesday that she plans to sue Baptist Medical Center South for malpractice.

She says she should have been given antibiotics which could have controlled an infection that eventually caused flesh in her extremities to turn black and die last February. Instead, emergency room staff gave her a pain prescription and sent her home.

The nurse's legs were later amputated below the knee and eight fingers were cut off to stop the spread of bacteria.

A spokeswoman for the hospital says Law's claims are incomplete and misleading and that hospital staff were not to blame.
