Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:
U.N.Fortunate Choice
The United Nations is taking some criticism for putting Iran on its commission on the status of women, enabling that country to help set U.N. policy on gender equality and the advancement of women.
More than 200 Iranian women's rights activists warned in a letter that the country's membership would pose a serious threat to the group's goals and mission.
Some people are pointing the finger at the U.S. and other western democracies for keeping silent during the vote. Cybercast News reports that may have been because Iran's appointment to the women's group ended its push for a spot on the more prestigious Human Rights Commission.
Michigan Republican Congressman Thaddeus McCotter said: "By electing the Tehran butchers to its commission on the status of women — a morally rancid United Nations has salted the wounds of the Iranian freedom movement's regime-murdered martyrs."
Hell Hath No Fury...
Florida's Republican Party is cleaning house now that Governor Charlie Crist has left the GOP to run for U.S. Senate as an independent.
The first thing to go in the party's Tallahassee headquarters is an oil painting of the governor that hung in the lobby. The Tampa Tribune reports the painting cost $7,500 and the party hopes to recoup some of that by hocking it on eBay. Other images of Crist, along with various mementos bearing his signature and likeness, have also been removed.
Take it to the Tweets
And finally, Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez is so happy with his new Twitter account, he is encouraging his friends to join. Chavez said during an appearance with Bolivian President Evo Morales: "I invite Evo and [former Cuban President] Fidel [Castro]. Evo — are you on Twitter? Let's invite Evo to Twitter."
Chavez already has over 130,000 followers and tweeted Thursday: "this has been an unexpected explosion. Thanks — I'm here with Evo. We will conquer!!"
