Authorities say an off-duty Houston police officer has been shot after he surprised two suspected burglars at the apartment complex where he apparently lives.

Houston police spokesman Victor Senties says the officer was in critical but stable condition Monday after surgery for a gunshot wound to the chest.

Senties tells the Houston Chronicle the officer spotted a man carrying a television and other items from an apartment. When the officer ordered the man to stop, another man emerged from the apartment and shot at the officer, striking him at least once.

Senties says the officer returned fire, but it was unclear if anyone else was hit.

Investigators were trying to determine if two men taken into custody were the suspects.
