A British serviceman has been killed in an avalanche in the Bavarian Alps, the Ministry of Defense has said.

Police spokesman Christian Owsinski says that a group of 27 British troops were on a ski training exercise in the Bavarian Alps when they were surprised by the avalanche.The avalanche struck at an altitude of 5,000 feet when the group was skiing down the Riedbergerhorn mountain.Two of them were dug out of the snow but a third airman was found unconscious.Paramedics brought in by helicopter later declared him dead.

An MoD spokesman said, "It is with great sadness the Ministry of Defense must confirm that an RAF service person has been killed in Oberstdorf, Bavaria, today.

"The individual was taking part in an adventurous training exercise when he was caught in an avalanche.

"The MoD would like to express sincere condolences to the family at this very sad time."

The airman's next of kin have been informed.
