A blind man was critically injured when an unprovoked attack on his guide dog caused him to plunge off an Australian pier, The Herald Sun reported Wednesday.
David Correa lost his balance and fell into the water at Hastings pier in Victoria after an uncontrolled dog lunged at his guide dog.
His distraught wife, Flavia, said he was in an induced coma after suffering broken ribs, a broken collarbone and a fractured spine. The 34-year-old recently had both kidney and pancreatic surgery.
Correa and his friend John Quilligan were out walking in Hastings, 36 miles from Melbourne, on Jan. 20 when they encountered another dog on the pier.
Quilligan said the owner grabbed the dog around the neck and pulled it away from Kel, Correa's guide dog.
"David's dog spun around that quickly, he let go of the harness and chain. He spun in the air, flipped and fell into the water," Quilligan said.
A good Samaritan jumped in after him, keeping his head above water until paramedics arrived.
