Police in New York say a woman apparently backed her car into her backyard pool and drowned.

Clarkstown police spokesman Sgt. Harry Baumann says 52-year-old Marianne Bax of West Nyack was pronounced dead Wednesday after police broke through the sunroof in the submerged car and pulled her out.

He said foul play had been ruled out and the death seemed to be accidental, but suicide had not been discounted. A medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

The sergeant said Bax's son and husband reported her missing Wednesday morning but the accident could have happened as early as Tuesday night.

He said Bax drove across more than 100 feet of lawn and through a chain-link fence before dropping into the pool.
